Does psychotherapy work?

Yes. Research has demonstrated that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for many psychological conditions. There are numerous evidence-based treatments that can help people. Additionally, scientific research has consistently shown that the relationship between therapist and patient is a key factor in the success of treatment. Therefore, the treatment approach is tailored to best fit with the patient and an emphasis is placed on fostering a collaborative relationship between therapist and patient.

Who can benefit from psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy can benefit any individual, couple, or family that is struggling with handling life stressors, life changes, and emotional, and behavioural difficulties. Contrary to popular misconceptions, individuals do not need to be suffering from a mental disorder to benefit from psychotherapy. It is the case that many people who suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders seek out psychotherapy, however, a large percentage of individuals without mental disorders also seeks out treatment.

How does psychotherapy work?

Psychotherapy involves one-on-one sessions between a therapist and patient in a safe, comfortable, and confidential environment. In the initial session, we work together to determine what difficulties you are struggling with, how these difficulties are negatively impacting on your life, and how we can best overcome these challenges. Together, we determine the appropriate course of therapeutic action, set specific goals, and a realistic timeline on how long treatment will need to be.

How long does Psychotherapy last?

Treatment length can range from 8 to 12 sessions up to 30 sessions or more. At Bhatia Psychological Services, there is no “one size fits all” approach to your treatment and we work towards the goal of providing resolutions to your difficulties in the most appropriate time frame.

Are psychological services covered by OHIP?

No. Psychological services are not covered by OHIP. However, most private insurance companies and extended health plans cover portions of services provided by a licensed psychologist. Receipts from psychologists are tax deductible. Fees are consistent with the recommendations of the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA).

Are you qualified to provide psychological treatment?

Dr. Bhatia is a registered psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and the College of Alberta Psychologists. All patients seeking psychological services should seek out qualified professionals who are registered with the governing bodies of professional practice of psychology.
